    You stand atop the outer wall.  Beyond it is the vast expanse of the
wasteland.  Inside is the almost equally-vast 'courtyard' of Barad-dur,
a flat plain more than a mile in both width and length.  In the courtyard
you count at least three army camps--but the dominating feature within
is the incredibly tall and massive Tower of Barad-dur.  It dwarfs all
else, including seemingly even the mountains to its east.  Surveying the
courtyard, you notice constant movement of troops though you can't tell
much about them from this distance.  Turning to closer quarters, you note
that you can walk along the top of the wall as far as it runs, through
ports cut through the regularly spaced towers.
A thick blanket of smoke from Mt. Doom completely covers the sky.

    You stand on a dusty plain which surrounds the Tower of Barad-dur.
It is entirely enclosed by the Ash Mountains to the east and an outer
wall on the other three sides.  It is, therefore, a courtyard for the
Tower...but its sheer size beggars the title.  At more than a mile's 
width in either direction, this 'courtyard' is large enough for entire
armies to camp on its grounds.  Indeed, you count at least three such
camps here.  The complete lack of color and natural life is numbing.
