    You are standing in a wide, high portal that runs through the castle
wall.  To the east is the sprawling city of Dol Amroth, though all you 
can see of it from here is a quiet commons.  To the west the portal opens
into the courtyard of the castle.  The walls of the portal come together
in an arch high overhead.  Glancing up, you notice the tell-tale spikes
of a portcullis sticking down through a rectangular slit in the arch.
You then notice a matching rectangular channel grooved into the stone
floor, and surmise that this is where the bottom of the portcullis comes
to rest when lowered.  A small archway in the north wall of the portal 
gives access to a winding spiral staircase leading up.
    The only obvious exits are up, west and east.
