    This is a guardpost in the winding staircase.  The walls are made of
well-hewn stone.  The area is bustling with activity.  There seem to be
guards everywhere.  There is almost no hope of escaping this forbidding
fortress alive.  The staircase spirals endlessly in both directions.  You
fight the urge to flee.  The levels seem to be more heavily guarded the
higher you ascend.  You begin to despair of ever reaching the pinnacle.
